Adirondak Bats

This page is intended to give you some background on dating your Adirondack baseball bats for the years of 1971 to the present. As with the other sections of this page, the following information is meant to be a guide. While I have given the overview there are additional refinements best learned from those more experienced than I and books like "BATS" found on the Dealers & Merchandise page. When the word "centerbrand" is used it is intended to mean that area in the middle of the bat; the term "barrel" refers to the area at the end of the bat; and "knob" refers to the area at the end of the handle.

As a preliminary matter, team bat collectors should take note that, throughout the period this page covers, Adirondack placed colored rings on its blonde colored bats matching the player's team's dominant color. Thus, Red Sox bats will have a red ring and Yankee bats will have a blue ring. Black bats typically had a white ring. The ring is located to the immediate left of the centerbrand.

1971-1979

As seen in Image 1, the 1971-1979 labeling contains a line almost like a parenthesis above and below the words "MADE IN USA" over "Adirondack" over "302". The centerbrand also contains a ® above the "d" in Adirondack.

The barrel of the 1971-1979 bat took one of the two forms shown below. The first form has "BIG STICK" over the player's name over either "PERSONAL MODEL" or "FLAME TREATED." During this time period the model number of the bat was stamped into the knob of the bat. Go to Top or back to Bat Companies

1980-Present

In 1980 Adirondack made the job of determining the year its bats were manufactured much easier by adding a code to the knob stamping of its bats that signifies the year used. The code is located directly below the model number and, during the 1980's has a three digit number followed by a single digit signifying the year (ie 0=1980, 8=1988). Starting in 1989 the three digit code is followed by a two digit number signifying the year made (ie 89=1989, 92=1992). Go to Top or back to Bat Companies

For the sake of thoroughness the following is a description of the centerbrand and barrel changes for the period of 1980 to the present.

1980-1982

During this time period Adirondack did not change the barrel labeling of its bats, however the centerbrand was modified slightly. As shown in image 5 the parenthesis stayed the same but "Adirondack" is no longer in script. The number 302 is above the word "Adirondack" and the words "PRO RING" are below "Adirondack." Also, the ® symbol was moved over the "c" in "Adirondack." Go to Top or back to Bat Companies

1983-1986

In 1983 Adirondack again changed the centerbrand. As shown in image 6, Adirondack kept the parenthesis above and below the centerbrand but placed a script "Rawlings" next to a circular "PRO RING" logo which were both placed over the word "ADIRONDACK" which itself was over the number 302. There were also ® symbols placed beneath the "s" in "Rawlings" and at the end of "Adirondack."

In 1984 Adirondack changed the centerbrand slightly by placing a "P" before the number 302, as shown in image 7.

As for the barrel, the labeling stayed the same as in prior years with the two variations described above. However, during part of 1985 and all 1986 the barrel labeling was changed to read "BIG STICK" over the player's name over the words "PROFESSIONAL MODEL," as shown in image 8. 1987-1989

During 1987 through 1989 Adirondack deleted the parenthesis and moved the word "ADIRONDACK" out from beneath the script word "Rawlings" in the centerbrand. The circular "PRO RING" logo was incorporated into the "ADIRONDACK" overlapping over the "NDAC" with a ® symbol below the "K." P302 remained below the script word "Rawlings" in very small type. 1990-1995

In the 1990 to 1995 time period Adirondack again changed the centerbrand. As shown in image 9 the "ADIRONDACK" was moved back below the script word "RAWLINGS" with the ® symbols placed in the positions similar to the 1983-1986 labeling below the "s" in "Rawlings" and after "ADIRONDACK." At some point in 1995 or 1996 the words "MADE IN USA" were also added between the words "Rawlings" and "ADIRONDACK" in the centerbrand.

Also, in a move greeted with cheers by all team bat collectors, Adirondack added the team name below the player's name on the barrel of its bats.Go to Top or back to Bat Companies

1995-1997

In 1996 Adirondack streamlined the centerbrand label giving it a circular look around a single script "R" with a ® symbol at the end of the "R." Beneath the "R" are the words, inside the circle, "Rawlings (in script) PRO BASEBALL (in block)." Outside the circle are the words "MADE IN USA." The barrel remained the same.
